Teeth whitening is a highly requested cosmetic dentistry procedure performed at our dental clinic in Milan. The natural color of the teeth changes over time, both on the external surface and within the internal structure of the tooth. The consumption of certain foods and beverages is the main cause of stains on the outer surface of the teeth. Other factors, such as plaque and tartar, also contribute to the gradual discoloration of the enamel’s outer layer.
If the clinical conditions allow it, we recommend that our patients undergo teeth whitening treatment at our clinic in Milan. This procedure can lighten the color of the teeth, bringing them to brighter shades of white. It removes the yellow, brown, or gray tones that tend to become more noticeable with age.

KEY ASPECTS OF TEETH WHITENING
At our dental clinic, we use various methods to whiten teeth. Since tooth color also depends on genetic factors, some patients may not achieve a perfectly white result even after whitening treatments. However, in most cases, the results are excellent, and patients are highly satisfied.
The tissue that determines tooth color is the dentin, located just beneath the outer layer of enamel. Dentin varies in shade from person to person and can have undertones of gray, yellow, or red.

The extrinsic mechanism that causes teeth to become discolored on the outer surface includes dental discoloration affecting the enamel. In these cases, the change in tooth color is caused by external elements, such as:
- cigarette smoking, which leads to yellowing of the teeth, dullness, stains, and also gum damage;
- overuse of mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine;
- consumption of coffee and tea, especially when teeth and tongue are not brushed thoroughly right after drinking;
- artificial colorants found in soft drinks and processed foods;
- red wine;
- licorice;
- cocoa;
- curry;
- medications such as iron supplements, and antibiotics based on tetracycline or minocycline.

At our dental clinic in Milan, we work with professional dentists specialized in dental aesthetics and whitening treatments. Teeth whitening methods are divided into at-home and in-office treatments:
- At-home treatments involve the use of products that can be applied at home. Most of these come in gel form and are applied to the teeth using custom-made acetate trays placed over the dental arch. These products typically use carbamide peroxide as the active ingredient;
- Professional treatments are performed at the dental office and are based on hydrogen peroxide—whitening agents made from highly concentrated oxygenated water.

An effective teeth whitening procedure requires a few preparatory steps that our dentists recommend to patients:
- tartar and plaque removal, to free the teeth from residues that could interfere with the whitening process;
- the so-called air polishing. This technique uses calcium bicarbonate or glycine powders, combined with a high-pressure water jet, to eliminate any remaining extrinsic stains on the enamel.
In addition, at our dental clinic in Milan, the whitening gel applied to the teeth can be activated with Laser or LED light.
The action mechanism of substances used for intrinsic teeth whitening involves the gradual absorption of the whitening agents by the enamel and dentin. The whitening process occurs inside the tooth and acts directly on the dentinal matrix structure, which cannot be whitened through regular daily oral hygiene.
The active ingredients in whitening products release oxygen free radicals, which bind to the colored organic molecules within the teeth and break them down. This reveals the natural white color of the dentin.
Treatments performed at dental clinics are always carried out under the supervision of a dentist. The dentist ensures that the surrounding tissues are properly isolated beforehand to avoid potential irritation or inflammation of the soft tissues (gums and mucous membranes).
When it comes to tooth stains, prevention is just as important. Regular dental check-ups help monitor the overall health of teeth and gums. The simplest way to prevent teeth from yellowing is through frequent and thorough oral hygiene.
After undergoing a teeth whitening treatment, it’s essential to maintain the achieved results with consistent oral care using a toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss. Whitened teeth may gradually return to their original shade. In such cases, simply repeating the whitening treatment periodically is often sufficient.

There are some contraindications for teeth whitening, which we always explain to our patients at our clinic. We strictly follow protocols and medical guidelines approved by the international scientific community. We do not recommend teeth whitening treatment:
- in cases where the patient has ceramic crowns or composite restorations. The treatment may act differently on natural teeth and restorations, causing a color imbalance in the smile;
- in the presence of dental caries. In such cases, teeth whitening should be postponed, giving priority to resolving the cavities. Moreover, the whitening agent could reach the pulp and cause severe damage to already compromised teeth;
- in the presence of inflamed gums or severe periodontal issues.
