PEDODONTICS OR PEDIATRIC DENTISTRY

PPedodontics, more commonly known as pediatric dentistry (or children’s dentistry), focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of dental problems in children.

Our dental clinic in Milan has extensive experience in caring for baby teeth, which must be protected because they serve several important functions:

they preserve the proper space and guide the eruption of permanent teeth;
they allow for correct chewing and speech functions;
they guide skeletal growth.

Baby teeth (also called primary teeth) are 20 in total and usually emerge completely between the ages of 3 and 4.

During this period, it is always advisable to consult a dental clinic specialized in pediatric dentistry and schedule regular check-ups, typically every 6 months. This allows for monitoring the health of the teeth and identifying any conditions, dental or skeletal misalignments that can be treated early on.

Which dental conditions in children are treated in pediatric dentistry?

There are several dental conditions that affect children and fall within the scope of pediatric dentistry:

Tooth decay (caries), which can be defined as a true infectious disease that affects the teeth and may progress rapidly, leading to more serious damage;
Pulpitis, an inflammation of the tooth pulp, which can be asymptomatic and is more common in children than in adults;
Dental abscess;
The so-called bottle syndrome, a severe form of tooth decay affecting the front teeth. This condition is quite common in pediatric dentistry. Its causes are usually poor daily oral hygiene or excessive use of baby bottles containing sugary liquids.

Prevention: a key aspect (also) in pediatric dentistry

Even in the field of pediatric dentistry, prevention plays a fundamental role. Through early screening of a child’s chewing function and bite (occlusion), we can detect any dental misalignments or skeletal anomalies (in the maxilla and mandible). This allows us to intervene appropriately using therapeutic treatments widely employed in pediatric dentistry.

An important part of prevention in pediatric dentistry is teaching children proper daily oral hygiene using the most suitable toothbrush.

Skeletal abnormalities in the oral cavity, if identified early in childhood, can often be corrected using dental appliances. These devices can help avoid the need for tooth extractions or orthognathic surgery—a branch of maxillofacial surgery aimed at correcting skeletal facial abnormalities.

Child psychology in pediatric dentistry

Dental anxiety, or odontophobia, is quite common in pediatric dentistry and should not be addressed with rigid or forceful approaches.

Our dentists work in collaboration with highly trained dental assistants, which allows us to make children feel comfortable through an appropriate psychological approach. We often present the dental visit as a game, where the child is given an important role. We are able to explain our work in a simple and reassuring way to help the child understand how we can assist them. Fear of the dentist in children can make it harder for them to cooperate and may prolong treatment times.

Regular pediatric dentistry visits help children become familiar with dental check-ups and the dentist figure, reducing the risk of developing dental phobias.

What therapeutic treatments are used in pediatric dentistry?

One of the most commonly treated conditions in pediatric dentistry is tooth decay. To treat it, we use various therapeutic procedures aimed at intervening promptly and preventing the problem from worsening. These include:

Molar sealants. The chewing surface of molars has deep grooves where plaque often accumulates. Daily oral hygiene practices are not always enough to prevent this buildup. Molar sealants involve applying a special resin into the grooves to protect the enamel from bacterial plaque. This protective layer can last for several years;
Laser treatment, which reduces the need for anesthesia and eliminates the use of high-speed drills;
Rubber dam, used in pediatric dentistry during dental procedures to isolate the treatment area. This allows the dentist to work in optimal conditions and protects the child from accidentally swallowing or inhaling dental debris, endodontic instruments, or disinfectant liquids;
Fillings, one of the most common therapeutic treatments in pediatric dentistry for dental caries. This procedure involves cleaning the decayed portion of the tooth and removing any necrotic or plaque-affected tissue. The cavity is then filled with a biocompatible material shaped to match the child’s natural tooth;
Pulpectomy, a procedure that involves removing the dental pulp using specialized tools for root canal treatment. At our dental clinic, pulpectomies are performed under local anesthesia.
